Why the game has no jump scares
A jump scare is a loan against attention. You take it now and pay it back by teaching the player that the game will tell them when to be afraid.
We would rather the player be unsure for forty minutes than startled for four seconds. That means no stingers, no sudden faces, and no music cue that announces danger.
It is harder to test. Playtesters cannot tell you the moment they were frightened, only that they stopped walking. We count steps per minute now.
